UK Space Agency launches Skills for Space

Companies in the UK Space Industry are facing recruitment challenges, with many struggling to find candidates with the specialist skills needed.

Skills shortages in areas such as engineering, software and data science, are becoming a significant barrier as the sector expands.

Skills shortages in areas such as engineering, software and data science, are becoming a significant barrier as the sector expands.

In response, the UK Space Agency has introduced a new internship initiative called “Skills for Space” offering placements across a range of disciplines and locations.

The programme will fund 50 paid summer placements with UK space organisations, giving undergraduates and further education students the chance to gain hands-on experience.

By matching students with host companies, the agency hopes to provide practical training while directly supporting businesses in need of fresh talent.

The ultimate aim is to strengthen the UK’s Space Industry workforce for the long term by equipping young people with valuable experience and widening access to the industry.

The scheme will help build a more diverse, skilled and sustainable talent pipeline capable of supporting continued growth in the sector.

Dr Paul Bate, CEO of the UK Space Agency, said: “Skills for Space will give young people from all backgrounds the chance to gain real-world experience and develop the skills our industry needs.”
